The San Juan County Textile Guild offers educational workshops taught by acclaimed instructors. Fees vary by teacher and the number of students registered. Workshops are held at various venues across the islands.

Katagami/Katazome


Katagami/Katazome with Professor Seiko Purdue

Katagami is the traditional Japanese art of paper stencils, and Katazome is its complement – the traditional art of dyeing textiles using a resistant rice paste which is applied to the cloth, most often through the stencil.

The first day of the workshop will be at the San Juan Island Grange and the second day will be at Karol McLuen's house.

Workshop Tuition – $95.00*

*The workshop tuition does not include the supplies fee. The supplies fee of $30.00 will be paid directly to Professor Purdue at the workshop.

Indigo Dying Workshop


Learn how to prepare and care for an indigo dye pot

When: Sun, September 08, 2024 2:00 AM, PDT
Where: Alchemy Art Center on San Juan Island

In this workshop you will learn how to prepare and care for an indigo dye pot. You will get all the information you need to create your own vat so you can continue to dye.

We will also be comparing and contrasting different fibers and how they dye.

Everything you need for the workshop is included in the workshop fee. You are also welcome to bring your own yarn, spinning fiber or fabric to dye as well.

Cedar Crossbark Workshop


Polly Adams Sutton is returning to San Juan Island to offer a weekend class!

Using handsplit cedar bark, this basket will be twined as well as woven with Northwest sweetgrass and bear grass. A cross warp pattern will center the basket with a lashed border for the finish.

When: November 2-3 10:00 - 4:00

Where: The Grange, Friday Harbor

Workshop Fee: $150*

*The workshop tuition does not include the supplies fee. The supplies fee of $90 will be paid directly to Polly Adams Sutton at the workshop.
